In July 2018, Detective Brandon Potts fatally shot unarmed 26-year-old Daniel Fuller during an arrest attempt. Potts’ service weapon discharged during a physical altercation, resulting in Fuller’s death. The incident led to public protests and scrutiny. Potts was placed on paid administrative leave and subsequently terminated in February 2019. He filed a wrongful termination lawsuit against the city, which was dismissed by the North Dakota Supreme Court in January 2021, affirming that his termination was lawful.
