In August 2009, off-duty Officer Cadovius’s wallet and badge were taken by a teenager at the Danbury Fair Mall. After recovering the items, Cadovius attempted to extort $2,000 from the teenager and threatened him. He was charged with third-degree larceny, second-degree threatening, and second-degree harassment in December 2010. In 2011, following an internal investigation, Cadovius was terminated from the department. He later pleaded guilty to breach of peace under the Alford doctrine, received a six-month suspended sentence, and a two-year conditional discharge requiring anger management. His appeal for unemployment benefits was denied, with the labor review board citing deliberate misconduct and violation of public trust.
