Brett McAlpin, chief investigator at the Rankin County Sheriff’s Office, was the subject of multiple brutality complaints but remained in his position. For example, in 2018 a man alleged McAlpin punched him during a traffic stop and then watched as other deputies dragged the victim into a setup drug deal inside his home; that case was later dismissed. In another 2019 complaint, McAlpin was accused of beating a driver and allowing his colleagues to assault the man after a chase, but no action was taken. McAlpin continued working for the department until 2023, when he was indicted and eventually pled guilty in a sweeping federal civil rights probe.
