In August 2017, Officer Brian Hoar, along with Officer Michael Gero, conducted a welfare check on Debra Kew, a woman with physical and emotional disabilities. They forcibly entered her residence, forced her to the ground, handcuffed her, and left her on the floor for 45 minutes. Kew sustained injuries requiring surgery and was hospitalized for six days. The town of Northfield settled the resulting lawsuit for $150,000 in March 2024. Neither officer faced disciplinary action, and both continue to work in law enforcement.
