In 2017, Officer Brian Tate was named in a federal lawsuit filed by Samuel Albert Tew, who alleged that Tate, along with other officers, used unnecessary brute force during an arrest at the Dothan Opera House. Tew claimed he suffered broken bones in his arm and post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of the encounter. The lawsuit sought unspecified monetary damages for alleged police brutality and violation of First Amendment rights.
