In June 2015, Chief Joe Derbonne was involved in a shootout in Clarkston Heights-Vineland during a narcotics investigation. He fired two shots through the windshield of his patrol car after a suspect fired in his direction. The incident raised public concern regarding his aggressive demeanor and jurisdictional authority. Additionally, in 2013, he terminated Officer Daniel Vargas, who later filed a lawsuit alleging wrongful discharge and emotional and financial damages.
