In 1978, Chief Mauldin was involved in the termination of Officer McKinley, allegedly due to McKinley’s union activities and public criticism of the city council. Despite Mauldin’s objections, city officials pressured him to dismiss McKinley, leading to a lawsuit where the court found the termination violated McKinley’s First Amendment rights.
