Former Patrol Sergeant Christian Handley was accused of subjecting Black subordinate Cpl. Jamin Johnson to years of racist name-calling and torment, including using racial slurs and making derogatory comments about Black individuals. An internal investigation in early 2021 substantiated these claims, leading to Handley’s termination by Sheriff Aaron Appelhans. Johnson filed a federal lawsuit against Handley, seeking damages for the alleged discrimination that led to his resignation in 2017.
