CSPD Officer Christopher Hummel was one of the officers involved in the October 2022 traffic stop of Dalvin Gadson that resulted in a brutality lawsuit and a $2.1 million settlement. Hummel, along with two colleagues, was accused of repeatedly striking and kicking Gadson during the arrest over a minor traffic violation, actions Gadson claimed were excessive force driven by racial bias. Though a CSPD internal investigation cleared Hummel and the others of wrongdoing, the high-profile case drew U.S. Department of Justice scrutiny, and two of the three officers were later reprimanded by the department for their conduct.
