In February 2020, Officer Christopher Matott was charged with multiple counts of domestic assault, including three counts of domestic assault, one count of aggravated domestic assault, two counts of criminal threatening, and two counts of second-degree unlawful restraint. The charges stemmed from allegations that he physically assaulted and threatened a woman he was in a relationship with, involving incidents of strangulation, being restrained by force, and repeated threats of death and violence. Matott was placed on unpaid administrative leave and subsequently discharged from the Winooski Police Department in March 2020. In February 2023, the Vermont Criminal Justice Council unanimously voted to decertify Matott, effectively ending his law enforcement career.
