    On November 14, 1976, Officer Claude Green was involved in a pursuit that led to the shooting and death of Calvin Ray Gibbs in a Monroeville shopping center parking lot. A lawsuit under 42 U.S.C. § 1983 resulted in a jury awarding $12,000 in damages against Green and another officer. The case highlighted issues of excessive force and wrongful death.
