On August 8, 2020, Officer Cody Riley was among eight officers involved in the fatal shooting of Jonathan Randell, who was experiencing a mental health crisis. Officers fired pepper balls at Randell as he harmed himself with a pocket knife. When Randell threw the knife in their direction, officers, including Riley, shot him multiple times, resulting in over 50 gunshot wounds. A civil rights lawsuit led to a $2 million settlement paid by the city to Randell’s estate. Riley remains employed with the Tulsa Police Department.
