Commander Mills, along with two other officers, filed a whistleblower lawsuit in January 2014, alleging retaliation for reporting concerns about a colleague’s mental health. The lawsuit claimed wrongful termination and a hostile work environment. In February 2016, Los Alamos County settled the lawsuit for $2 million and offered reinstatement to the officers, which they declined.
