In 2019, Officer Pettus was captured on camera punching and kicking a man, Samuel Allen, after serving him a citation for riding a bicycle without lights. The incident led to charges of assault and civil rights violations. Pettus resigned from the department in June 2023 as part of a dismissal agreement that required him to surrender his law enforcement certification and agree not to seek employment in the field. A separate civil lawsuit filed by Allen against Pettus is still active.
