In 2017, Corporal Pickens was found to have violated regulations pertaining to failure to perform the duties of rank or assignment during a vehicular pursuit that resulted in the death of Kimberly King. Sheriff Gary Borders determined that Pickens supervised and ultimately led the pursuit, which was deemed to have violated department policies. As a result, Pickens faced disciplinary action for his role in the incident.
