In June 2013, Corporal William Covington was involved in a case where an inmate, Srinivas Nallani, committed suicide under his watch. Covington conducted a cell check in just 20 seconds, failing to ensure the inmate’s well-being. He admitted to not seeing the inmate’s face or verifying consciousness. The court found a genuine dispute over whether Covington deliberately ignored known risks, leading to the inmate’s death. The district court’s grant of summary judgment in Covington’s favor was reversed, allowing the case to proceed against him.
