In early 2017, Officer Franks was accused of using his position to obtain a free hotel room at a Holiday Inn Express. He denied the allegations, claiming he offered to pay and informed hotel staff the room was for personal use. The Alabama Ethics Commission found probable cause that Franks violated the Alabama Ethics Act and referred the matter to the district attorney. In December 2017, Franks was dismissed from the department. Upon appeal, the Civil Service Board found he misrepresented facts to hotel employees and during the investigation. The Board deemed termination too severe and instead imposed a 15-day suspension without pay and a demotion to patrolman for at least one year. Franks alleged racial discrimination and retaliation, but his federal claims were dismissed in 2022.
