In 1998, Sergeant Cynthia Brissette was terminated after an incident where she made inappropriate comments to an inmate regarding his anatomy. The termination was later reduced to a demotion following arbitration. Brissette filed a lawsuit alleging gender-based discrimination and retaliation, claiming that her termination was a disproportionate sanction compared to male officers’ treatment. The court awarded her $150,000 in compensatory damages for emotional distress.
