In September 2022, Sheriff Dan Coverley was cited for violating state ethics law by appearing at political campaign events in his sheriff’s uniform, endorsing U.S. Senate candidate Adam Laxalt. The Nevada Ethics Commission determined this was against the law, as it constituted using governmental property to benefit a personal interest. Coverley accepted responsibility, agreed to hold a training session with his staff to ensure compliance, and committed not to wear his uniform at campaign events. Additionally, in 2020, Coverley faced criticism for telling the Douglas County library director not to call his department if they needed help, following the library’s support of Black Lives Matter. This statement drew national attention and led to a protest that was met with a massive counter-protest. In 2001, Coverley was sued for use of excessive force in Carson City. He was disciplined and suspended for one day for using an improper lifting technique but was cleared of excessive use of force charges.
