Former Sergeant Dan Duryee falsely claimed to have served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Gulf War, including fabrications about combat experience and injuries. These falsehoods led to his appointment as commander of the Special Response Team without proper qualifications. In 2013, the Montana Public Safety Officer Standards and Training Council revoked all his law enforcement certifications, permanently barring him from serving as an officer in Montana. Duryee resigned from the department in January 2013 amidst these controversies.
