In August 2011, Deputy Dan Wise was involved in a traffic stop near Abercrombie, ND, where he and Deputy Steve Gjerdevig were accused of using excessive force against three men: Christopher Miranowski, Adam Nelson, and Derek Grund. The men alleged that the deputies yelled at them with perverse language and assaulted them during the stop. A federal civil rights lawsuit was filed in 2012, and in January 2016, the North Dakota Insurance Reserve Fund settled the case for $142,500. The settlement terms specified that the payments were not an admission of liability. ([insurancejournal.com](https://www.insurancejournal.com/news/midwest/2016/01/22/395727.htm?utm_source=openai))
