Deputy David Lovejoy was involved in a 2022 incident where he and another deputy fired 17 shots at a suspect, striking National City Police Detective Rowdy Pauu in the leg. Pauu filed a lawsuit alleging excessive force and inadequate training. The lawsuit also cited a 2020 incident where Lovejoy allegedly pulled a woman out of her car by her hair during a minor traffic stop, resulting in complaints of hair being pulled out.
