Deputy Ben Carver interacted with inmate Christopher Helphenstine twice in April 2017. On April 18, Carver observed Helphenstine in the medical isolation cell and noted he ‘looked good’ and was ‘just sitting up like he felt good.’ Helphenstine later died in custody. A lawsuit alleged deliberate indifference to Helphenstine’s medical needs, but the court found Carver’s actions did not demonstrate knowledge of an unjustifiably high risk of harm.
