In January 2018, Deputy Cole Knight arrested 74-year-old Albert Carrillo during a traffic stop in Belen, New Mexico. Carrillo alleged that Knight falsely arrested him in retaliation for a comment comparing the deputy’s training to that of the Gestapo. The arrest led to a civil rights lawsuit filed by Carrillo, claiming false arrest and violation of free speech rights. Prior to joining the Valencia County Sheriff’s Office, Knight was a defendant in a 2012 federal civil rights lawsuit alleging false arrest and assault during his tenure with the Albuquerque Police Department. The case was settled in 2013 with undisclosed terms.
