In November 2018, Deputy Staley approached Alonzo Keller at a gas station, requested his ID, and, despite Keller’s cooperation and lack of any legal violations, handcuffed him. Keller, a dialysis patient, requested not to be handcuffed, but Staley ignored him, pushed him to the ground, and punched him multiple times in the head, causing significant injuries. Staley later failed to enter the arrest into the system, and months later, Keller was wrongfully charged with resisting arrest, a charge that was eventually dismissed. An internal review found that Staley falsified his incident report and use of force form, leading to his discharge from the Sheriff’s Office. Keller received a $500,000 settlement in December 2021.
