On May 3, 2024, Deputy Eddie Duran fatally shot Roger Fortson during a response to a reported disturbance. An internal investigation determined that Duran’s use of deadly force was not objectively reasonable and violated agency policy. As a result, Duran was terminated from the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office on May 31, 2024.
