Deputy Jared Rostro was involved in a wrongful arrest case in 2017, where he and Deputy Eric Threlkeld investigated and prosecuted Jason Sanchez for aggravated stalking and violating a restraining order amid a child custody dispute. Sanchez was convicted in 2020 and sentenced to about 18 months’ incarceration. In December 2022, the convictions were overturned due to inadequate evidence, leading to a lawsuit against Eddy County, Sheriff Mark Cage, and the deputies for malicious prosecution, unlawful arrest, false imprisonment, and negligent hiring and training. The case is ongoing as of April 2023.
