On November 23, 2023, Deputy Jaymz Bagby, a white male, filed a racial discrimination and retaliation lawsuit against Sheriff Mark Pettway and other officials. Bagby alleged that after being hired, he was subjected to a criminal investigation based on an inmate’s false accusation. Despite the inmate later admitting to fabricating the incident, Bagby was suspended for 15 days, while another deputy involved received only a two-day suspension. Bagby claimed that the Sheriff’s Office has a history of discrimination and retaliation against white employees.
