In January 2018, Deputy Juan Rodriguez participated in the fatal shooting of John Bailon during an incident involving a stolen vehicle. Rodriguez and Deputy Joseph Rowland confronted Bailon, who attempted to flee, leading to the use of a taser and subsequent gunfire that resulted in Bailon’s death. A federal lawsuit filed in March 2020 alleges wrongful death and excessive force. An internal investigation concluded that the deputies adhered to department policies. Rodriguez has since joined the New Mexico State Police.
