In July 2022, Deputy Justin Johnson initiated a traffic stop on Mark Goldstein and his driver, Thomas Larkai, suspecting them of drug trafficking without probable cause. Johnson coordinated with the Rapides Area Drug Enforcement (RADE) task force to stop the vehicle. During the stop, Larkai was detained and searched without a warrant, leading to the discovery of Excedrin tablets misidentified as Vicodin. Despite tests confirming the tablets were not controlled substances, Larkai was charged with possession. Goldstein was also searched, and THC gummies were found, for which he had a medical card from another state. Both men were interrogated for hours and detained, during which Goldstein suffered a stroke due to lack of medical attention. A lawsuit was filed against Johnson and the RPSO, alleging racial profiling, illegal searches, and deliberate indifference to medical needs. The case is ongoing.
