In May 2022, Deputy Katherine Adams allegedly forced female detainees at Portsmouth City Jail to expose their genitals to prove they were menstruating as a condition for receiving sanitary products. This incident led to a lawsuit filed by detainee Danaesha Martin in April 2023, accusing Adams of sexual abuse, gross negligence, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. Martin is seeking $1 million in compensatory damages and $350,000 in punitive damages. The Portsmouth Sheriff’s Office conducted an internal investigation and stated that the incident did not occur. Adams is no longer employed by the Portsmouth Sheriff’s Office.
