In 2022, Deputy Kyle O’Brien was accused of using excessive force during the arrest of a hearing-impaired individual, Joseph T. Stakey. Stakey alleged that O’Brien’s actions violated his civil rights, leading to a lawsuit filed in the United States District Court for the District of Idaho. The court allowed Stakey to proceed with his excessive force claims against O’Brien. The case is ongoing as of May 3, 2023.

Why This Matters

By organizing this data, we can potentially demonstrate when officers were previously aware of laws they later claim ignorance of, challenging qualified immunity defenses and promoting accountability.
