In February 2022, Deputy Lynn Whittle, serving as a school resource officer, was involved in an incident where he choked and used a stun gun on a student, Justin Freeman, at Huntsville High School. Freeman sued Whittle for excessive force, unlawful arrest, and civil battery. In July 2024, a federal jury found Whittle liable on all counts, awarding Freeman $18,000 in actual damages and $50,000 in punitive damages. The jury determined that Whittle’s actions violated Freeman’s constitutional rights and were conducted with malice or reckless disregard.
