In July 2022, Deputy Dietrick fatally shot David Pelaez-Chavez, an undocumented worker, after a foot chase. Dietrick claimed Pelaez-Chavez picked up an object he believed was a rock, posing a threat. The incident raised concerns about the Sheriff’s Office’s supervision, training, and discipline of deputies. As of March 2023, no charges had been filed against Dietrick.
