In April 2017, Deputy Michael Durkan was on duty when inmate James Wippel died from a perforated ulcer in the Jefferson County Jail. Durkan, along with two other deputies, was charged with criminally negligent homicide in April 2018. In December 2018, all three deputies were acquitted. Following the acquittal, Durkan filed a civil lawsuit in July 2019 against the prosecutors, alleging malicious prosecution and seeking $10 million in damages.
