On April 9, 2021, Deputy Nolan Davis attempted to pull over a vehicle without license plates driven by 26-year-old Paige Pierce. Pierce fled, leading to a pursuit. After deploying spike strips, Pierce’s vehicle was disabled, and she turned into a driveway. As Deputy Davis exited his patrol car, Pierce attempted to drive past him. Davis fired his weapon, striking Pierce three times, including once in the head, resulting in her death. The Delta County District Attorney declined to file criminal charges against Davis, citing self-defense. Pierce’s family announced plans to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the Delta County Sheriff’s Office.
