On April 18, 2022, Deputy O’Brien was involved in the case of detainee Benally, who exhibited severe medical symptoms including chest pain and shortness of breath. Despite being informed of Benally’s deteriorating condition, O’Brien’s response was limited to relaying information to the medical unit without ensuring immediate and adequate medical intervention. Benally was left unattended for approximately twenty minutes and was later found unresponsive, leading to his death. This incident raised concerns about O’Brien’s failure to take appropriate measures to address a detainee’s serious medical needs.
