In 1986, Deputy Pete Cribben was involved in the unlawful arrest and physical assault of John Davis. Cribben, along with other deputies, arrested Davis without probable cause, subjected him to physical assault, and filed false criminal charges against him. A jury found Cribben and the Mason County Sheriff’s Office liable under 42 U.S.C. § 1983, awarding damages to Davis and other plaintiffs. The court held that the Sheriff’s Office’s failure to adequately train its officers constituted deliberate indifference to the safety of its inhabitants.
