In January 2014, Deputy Pew was involved in the detention of Brian Howarth, who was experiencing severe medical issues. Despite Howarth’s deteriorating condition and requests for medical attention, Pew and other officers failed to provide adequate care. Howarth was later found unresponsive and pronounced dead. A lawsuit was filed alleging deliberate indifference to serious medical needs. The court found sufficient evidence to create issues of fact regarding Pew’s knowledge of Howarth’s condition and failure to act.
