On November 7, 1995, Deputy Williamson was transporting inmate John Edgar Manning to a medical clinic when Manning, despite being in handcuffs and leg irons, managed to wrestle a revolver away from Williamson. Manning then shot and killed both Deputy Williamson and a civilian, George Shepherd, at the clinic. This incident led to a wrongful-death lawsuit, which was settled in May 1999 for $250,000. The lawsuit alleged negligence in the transport and restraint procedures of the Sheriff’s Office.
