In September 2023, Deputy Campadonia conducted a traffic stop on Darrin Dickson, an unhoused man living in his vehicle. During the stop, Campadonia escalated the situation by breaking the driver’s side window with his baton, causing injuries to Dickson’s face and eye. He then grabbed Dickson by the throat and struck him in the face with his elbow. Following the arrest, Campadonia had Dickson’s vehicle towed and impounded, contrary to department policy. A federal lawsuit was filed against Campadonia and Humboldt County, alleging excessive force and constitutional violations. In November 2024, the county agreed to a $150,000 settlement and committed to providing additional training to patrol deputies.
