In 2005, Deputy Sheriff Greg Leatherberry was involved in an incident where he used force to remove the clothing of an inmate, Connie Anne Shaw, who was placed on suicide watch. Shaw alleged that Leatherberry threw her against a cement block bunk, causing her to hit a wall and fall face-first, and that he applied pressure to her neck while forcibly removing her clothing. Shaw claimed this caused her significant pain and emotional distress. The deputies involved provided conflicting accounts, denying excessive force. The case was reviewed by the Wisconsin Supreme Court, which upheld the lower court’s decision granting summary judgment in favor of the defendants, concluding that the force used was not excessive under the circumstances.
