Deputy Sheriff Szemites has been the subject of approximately twenty complaints regarding use of force and treatment of inmates at the jail. In December 2010, he was involved in an incident where an inmate alleged excessive force was used during a confrontation. The inmate sustained injuries requiring medical attention and filed a lawsuit alleging violations of constitutional rights. The case raised questions about the department’s training and supervision practices.
