ParticipantIncident: Detective Daniel Pue, an 11-year SAPD veteran, was arrested on January 7, 2019, for a domestic violence incident. He was accused of punching his ex-girlfriend in the face during an argument outside his home
. Bexar County Sheriff’s deputies responded and jailed Pue on a family violence assault charge. The criminal case, however, did not move forward – the ex-girlfriend/victim requested that charges be dropped, and ultimately prosecutors did dismiss the case at her request
. Internal Affairs still investigated the conduct. Given the credible allegation of assault, Chief McManus imposed an indefinite suspension on Pue, effectively firing him from SAPD in 2019.
Outcome: Pue appealed his firing. While awaiting arbitration, he took advantage of a loophole to stay in law enforcement: just eight months after his arrest, he was hired in 2019 as a reserve officer by the Leon Valley Police Department (a small city near San Antonio)

. This reserve role, which came with no full-time pay, allowed Pue to keep his peace officer license active (state law permits a license to lapse if an officer isn’t affiliated with an agency for two years)
. Leon Valley’s chief, Joe Salvaggio (a former SAPD commander), defended hiring Pue as a reserve along with two other fired SAPD officers, saying he conducted background checks and considered evidence
. Pue’s arbitration appeal remained pending as of mid-2020
. He had not been reinstated to SAPD at that time. Essentially, the outcome for Pue was that he lost his SAPD job due to the misconduct, avoided criminal conviction, and then continued working part-time in law enforcement elsewhere while seeking to overturn his firing. (As of this writing, there’s no report of Pue returning to SAPD, so presumably the firing stands or the appeal was unsuccessful. He represents how an officer can be fired for violent misconduct yet still find employment with a different department.)
