In February 2021, former deputy Detrick Vandice Bishop, 49, was charged with nine counts of submitting false statements to obtain unemployment benefits. While employed full-time with the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office, Bishop allegedly submitted false information to receive unemployment benefits. He was employed with the department from April 5, 1998, until his termination on February 16, 2021. Sheriff Lee Foster condemned the actions, stating it was ‘abhorrent’ for a law enforcement officer to commit such fraud.
