Between October 2015 and March 2021, MPD was compelled to rehire 37 officers previously terminated for misconduct, resulting in $14.3 million in back pay. These officers had been dismissed for offenses including drunk driving and sexual abuse. The D.C. Auditor’s 2022 report highlighted that some reinstated officers were classified as a ‘Threat to Safety,’ and several faced new misconduct reports post-reinstatement. Additionally, a class-action lawsuit filed in 2021 by ten Black female officers alleged systemic racial and sexual discrimination within the department, spanning over two decades and involving multiple police chiefs.
