Over the past decade, the Grand Rapids Police Department has faced multiple allegations of excessive force and civil rights violations. Notable incidents include the fatal shooting of Patrick Lyoya by Officer Christopher Schurr in 2022, leading to second-degree murder charges and Schurr’s termination. In 2019, five officers were sued for allegedly using excessive force during the arrest of Fahirri Dannah, resulting in serious injuries. In 2020, Officer Phillip Reinink received a two-day unpaid suspension for using a chemical spray and shooting a protester with a projectile at close range. Additionally, in 2017, officers detained 11-year-old Honestie Hodges at gunpoint, leading to a lawsuit alleging mental anguish. These incidents highlight ongoing concerns regarding the department’s use of force and treatment of minority individuals.
