Over the past decade, the Mankato Police Department has faced several notable incidents involving officer misconduct. In 2019, a lawsuit resulted in a $270,000 settlement due to excessive use of force by an officer, leading to a complex wrist fracture for the victim. Additionally, in 2015, two officers were accused of using excessive force during an arrest, with one officer applying a knee to the suspect’s neck; however, no disciplinary action was taken against them. In 2013, the department was implicated in a lawsuit alleging unauthorized access to a news anchor’s driver’s license information. Furthermore, the department’s director faced a five-day suspension for training errors related to part-time officers. These incidents highlight challenges in officer conduct, training protocols, and internal accountability within the department.

Why This Matters

By organizing this data, we can potentially demonstrate when officers were previously aware of laws they later claim ignorance of, challenging qualified immunity defenses and promoting accountability.
