In 1998, detention officer Dominick Gonzales was convicted and imprisoned for sexually assaulting a female inmate. He was demoted for this behavior, but it did not prevent the subsequent assault. Civil suits were filed against Sheriff Salazar and the Huerfano County Sheriff’s Office as a result.
