In December 2023, while serving as the Mount Vernon Police Chief, former Saraland officer Duncan Herrington was arrested in Saraland for third-degree domestic violence and harassment following a domestic incident at his residence. He was identified as the primary aggressor towards a family member. Subsequently, the Mount Vernon City Council terminated his contract in January 2024. Herrington had previously been employed by the Saraland Police Department and was awarded Officer of the Year in 2002.
